Technical Features & Benefits
The 8201-HI-IS module is designed to support instrumentation in hazardous (explosive) environments. Its analog inputs are intrinsically safe (IS), meaning they limit voltages and currents to safe levels even under fault conditions. This allows the module to interface with field transmitters in zones where explosion risk must be managed.
Each of the eight input channels handles 4–20 mA signals, with a broader full-scale window from 0.5 mA to 22 mA for flexibility. It offers 16-bit resolution and a module-to-railbus update latency of approximately 33 ms. In HART mode, data retrieval per channel is ~0.75 s.
Fault detection is built in: open-circuit (< 0.5 mA), short-circuit (> 21.5 mA), and range violations are monitored per channel. The module also provides a minimum of 15 V to drive field transmitters under load and has an internal power supply for that purpose.
From a safety standpoint, the module’s field circuits are rated [Ex ia] IIC (intrinsic safety) with the following entity parameters: Uo = 28 V, Io = 93 mA, Po = 0.65 W, with limits on capacitance and inductance for wiring (Ca ≤ 0.14 µF, La ≤ 4.38 mH)
Temperature stability is excellent: over –40 °C to +70 °C, it maintains ±0.006 % of span per °C drift.
Because of its design, the module supports diagnostics, HART passthrough, modular integration into PAC8000 racks, and easy hot-replacement in some rack designs. Its intrinsic safety rating and diagnostic capabilities reduce risk in hazardous installations, while making maintenance more transparent.

Product Role & System Fit
In a PAC8000 I/O rack, 8201-HI-IS occupies a slot in the carrier (backplane) and communicates via the railbus to the system controller (or BIM). It interfaces with field analog transmitters located in hazardous zones, reading their signals in a safe fashion, and reporting to the control logic or safety logic.
Because of its intrinsically safe classification, it is suitable in zones where explosive atmospheres may exist (Zones 0, 1, or Division 1), subject to the correct wiring and barrier installation. It allows mixing of safe-area electronics (in the rack) with hazardous-area field instrumentation.
The module is often paired with intrinsically safe field terminals (8621-FT-IS or loop-disconnect 8622-FT-IS) and carriers rated for IS construction. The system enables modular expansion: you can mix 8201-HI-IS with other safety, analog, or digital modules in the same PAC8000 chassis (given proper segregation).
Because of its standardized width (42 mm) and mechanical keying, module insertion is straightforward. It is also compatible with hot-swap procedures where the rack supports removal and insertion without full shutdown, though care must be taken in field wiring and bypass configurations.
Installation & Maintenance Insights
- Field Wiring Practices: Use shielded, twisted pair cables; maintain intrinsic safety wiring limits (capacitance, inductance). Comply with the entity parameters (Ca, La) for field circuits.
- Field Terminals: Use IS-rated field terminal blocks (e.g. 8621-FT-IS, 8622-FT-IS). These ensure safety in field wiring and sometimes loop disconnection capability.
- Backplane Seating: Ensure full insertion in the PAC8000 carrier; poor railbus connections can cause communication errors.
- Hot-Swap Procedures: If permitted, insert or remove module only when system is in bypass or safe mode; confirm re-initialization and diagnostics after insertion.
- Diagnostics & Configuration: After installation, confirm each channel’s wiring status (open/short), calibration offset, and configure alarm thresholds.
- Periodic Checks: Monitor drift, calibration integrity, temperature conditions in the rack, and terminal connections for corrosion or looseness.
- Firmware / Parameter Backups: Always back up module configuration and calibration settings for rapid replacement or recovery.
